How to check sidewall markings against a quotation

A size on a quotation and a size on a sidewall are not the same thing until you check five fields: size, tube-type or tubeless, load index, pattern and approval marks.

How to check sidewall markings against a quotation

This guide is the checklist we use when a buyer sends a size list and asks for a quotation, and again when the first shipment is about to leave. It is the same text as the buyer guide on the Moonstar home page, kept here so you can send a single link to the person who checks the goods.

The point is simple. A quotation is only useful if it can be checked against the tyre that actually arrives, field by field, without guessing.

Size: compare character by character

Size: compare the size on the sidewall (for example 2.75-17 or 90/90-18) with the size line in the quotation, character by character.

This sounds obvious and is still the most common mismatch. 2.75-17 and 2.75-18 are different tyres; 90/90-18 and 3.00-18 are close in width and are not interchangeable. If your market mixes decimal and inch sizes across models, write both forms in the enquiry so the quotation can carry both.

Construction: tube-type or tubeless

Construction: the quotation should say tube-type (TT) or tubeless (TL) for each size.

Tube-type and tubeless are separate products with separate pricing, and a quotation that does not state which one you asked for will be re-quoted later. Say it per size, because the same series can be supplied in both.

Load index and speed symbol

Load index and speed symbol: if your market requires them, they should appear in the quotation and on the sidewall.

Where the regulation in your market asks for a marked load index and speed symbol, the quotation line and the sidewall must match. If your market does not require them, say so, and the quotation will follow the size-only format.

Pattern

Pattern: the pattern number in the quotation should match the tread you approved.

The pattern number is the reference for the tread design you saw in a sample or in photos. Approve a pattern once, in writing, and use its number in every order; that is what keeps the second container identical to the first.

Approval marks: only for the sizes covered

Approval marks: an E-mark on the sidewall only counts for sizes covered by an approval. Today our approvals cover 120/70-12, 2.50-17, 2.75-17, 3.00-17, 2.75-18, 3.00-18, 3.25-18, 100/80-18, 140/80-18, 2.75-21, 90/90-21 and 90/100-21; more sizes are being added, so check your size against the approval document.

The manufacturer's documents on this site list ISO 9001:2015, the NHTSA tire manufacturer code 056, and ECE R75 (E-mark) approvals for those sizes. A size outside the list is not covered by that approval yet, whatever the tread looks like.

From sample approval to bulk supply: what to keep on file

The second half of the check happens before the order is placed. Keep these five items together in one folder:

  • Photos of the approved sample: sidewall, tread and any label.
  • The final quotation: size, construction, pattern, quantity per size and price.
  • Packing agreed: tyres wrapped one by one and hand-stacked; tubes in bags or cartons.
  • Payment terms: 30% deposit, balance before shipment.
  • The list of documents your market needs, and which ones we confirmed.

When a claim or a customs question comes up two containers later, that folder answers it faster than any email thread.

What to send for a quotation

What should I send for a quotation? The size as printed on the sidewall, tube-type or tubeless, a pattern number or a tread photo, quantity per size, and the destination port. For tubes, the valve type.

Minimum order is 300 pieces per size for tyres and 2,000 pieces per size for inner tubes. Lead time is 20–30 days. Send your size list and we quote each size.

Written by the Moonstar export desk. Product facts follow the manufacturer's documents; figures for your order are confirmed in the quotation.
